  • Why does RailSaver ask for my first name, age, citizenship, and email?

RailSaver needs your age and citizenship to determine which railpasses you are eligible to purchase. RailSaver asks for your first name so it can present you with a customized itinerary – with your first name on it. RailSaver asks for your email address so that we can email you our railpass recommendations - so you can refer back to this email to recall which railpasses to purchase. RailSaver, or one of RailSaver's partners, may also email you with special European travel material from time to time. You may choose not to enter your email address. For more information on privacy, see RailSaver’s Privacy Statement.

Should I choose 1st Class or 2nd Class?

Most travelers prefer the cost savings of 2nd Class. 1st Class travel has wider seats and less crowded train cars. 1st Class travel is not available on all trains. Try both options and compare the prices.

Why would I prefer purchasing railpasses (rather than point-to-point tickets)?

Many travelers feel that the value of railpasses is greater than the price of point-to-point tickets that they replace. Travelers can purchase everything in advance, thereby eliminating foreign currency exchanges, language confusion, and long ticket lines. Railpass holders enjoy the convenience of jumping on and off trains as they please. Many travelers to Europe demand the convenience and simplicity that railpasses offer.

    What is my arrival city?

This is the city that you fly into. For example, if you fly from New York City to London, England; then, London, England would be your arrival city.

    What is my arrival date?

This is the date which your airplane lands in Europe. For example, your flight may leave New York City on July 1 and arrive in London on July 2. July 2 is your arrival date.

Why do I need to tell RailSaver each city I am traveling to?

RailSaver needs to know your entire itinerary in order to provide you the most accurate information.

Why do I need to choose between a Train, Boat, Mountain Lift, Bus, Car, etc?

RailSaver needs to know how you plan to get from one city to another in order to provide you with the best information.

Should I bother entering cities that I am not traveling to by train?

    Yes. Enter your entire itinerary.

How do I know if a trip from one city to another is an “overnight journey” and why does it matter?

Please check the train schedules for each segment of your itinerary (choose the schedules icon). RailSaver needs to know if a segment is an “overnight journey” because flexipass holders enter the next day’s date on their railpass for “overnight journeys” (any trip that begins after 7:00 pm).

What if I don’t know the country that a destination is in?

Click here for an online map of Europe. Or, you can make your best guess – if you are wrong, RailSaver will give you a message saying it could not find your city and offer you suggestions.

RailSaver could not find one of my destination cities. What do I do?

First, check your spelling and country selection for this city. Use the train schedules to verify that this city has train service. RailSaver has a database of thousands of cities and tourist destinations in Europe. However, it is possible that RailSaver may not contain your destination. Try entering a nearby larger city.

I don’t know how many nights I will be in each city. What do I do?

It is OK to guess – but be sure to guess high. For example, if you think you may spend anywhere from 3 to 6 nights in Paris, enter “6”.

I have more than 7 destinations, what do I do?

Click the “Add More Destinations” button.

I have more than 15 destinations, what do I do?

RailSaver can only accept up to 15 destinations per calculation. Remove some of your smaller destination cities that are in-between your larger destinations. Be sure to keep the major cities you are visiting, as well as your final destination (the city you are flying out of).

I am traveling with more than 1 companion, what do I do?

RailSaver calculates the best railpasses for up to 2 travelers at a time. For most itineraries, all travelers in groups of more than 2 will get the same price. Keep in mind, however, that all people in the group must travel together at all times. You may want to try entering both 1 and 2 travelers for your itinerary. RailSaver will compute different railpass options that you should consider. In addition, you may wish to speak with one of the recommended rail travel agencies to verify your choice.

I do not live in the USA, can I purchase these passes?

Most likely. Railpasses are valid for anybody who does not live in Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States (the former Soviet Union), Turkey, Morocco, Algeria or Tunisia.

I live in Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States (the former Soviet Union), Turkey, Morocco, Algeria or Tunisia. Can I purchase railpasses?

You cannot purchase the railpasses recommended by RailSaver. However, you can purchase Interrail and Euro-Domino railpasses in your home country.

What cities are in the RailSaver database?

The RailSaver database contains thousands of larger and smaller cities throughout Europe. The database also contains train stations important to travelers, such as airport train stations, ferry terminals, and resorts.

How many nights should I spend in each city that I visit?

Some travelers enjoy a fast pace and generally only stay 1 night in each city that they visit. Other travelers like a more leisurely pace, and spend 3 or more nights in each city. So, the faster you like to travel, the fewer nights you will spend in each city. If you like to see more than 1 city each day (you are super-fast), then choose "1 night".

Why do I need to know the number of nights that I spend in each city that I visit? Why do I need to know how long I'll be traveling in Europe?

RailSaver calculates the estimated number of cities that you will see during your travels - and the number of train trips between these cities. This is an crucial to RailSaver's calculations that involve the many possible itineraries that you might follow.

What is my Estimated Departure Month?

The month (and year) that you leave for Europe.

Why do I need to select the countries that I plan to visit?

RailSaver can best help you choose the best railpass if you select the countries that you will be traveling to. If you do not know where you wish to travel, or you desire the freedom to go anywhere, then check the box labeled "I do not know. I may wish to travel anywhere in Europe."

Do I need to select countries that I will only travel through - but not actually get off the train and visit?

No. RailSaver will figure out these "through countries" for you. RailSaver will recommend a railpass that covers these "through countries" if the pass will save you money.
