| General Info Regarding Overnight Travel |
In general, you must reserve either a seat, couchette, or sleeper to ride on an overnight train.
Unreserved travel is generally not permitted.
You may book this reservation when you purchase your railpasses (call 888-RAIL-PASS) or after you arrive in Europe.
For sleeper/couchette travel during the summer or weekends, book as far in advance as possible (max 60 days advance booking).
You can purchase an upgrade to a couchette or sleeper from the conductor if space is available.
Reservations are non-refundable. Specify smoking preference when booking.
Children under 10 not requiring a separate bed do not need a reservation.
If you do not book all the bunks in a sleeper compartment (ie - you book 1 bed in a double compartment), you will be sharing the compartment with a member of the same sex
Couchettes are usually mixed sex except for a few trains with ladies-only compartments.
Inside couchettes, you are expected to sleep in day clothes.
Sleeper and couchette passengers generally entrust tickets, railpasses, and passports to attendent/conductor for duration of journey.
Except for Hotel and CityNightLine trains, overnight trains do not have food & drink service. Meals/drinks available to sleeper passengers may not be available to couchette and seat passengers. Bring food & drink with you. |
